Ukrainian companies launch first test satellite for independent communications network

Ukrainian company HIMERA and Danish company GomSpace launched OBRIA NANO, the first test satellite of a planned independent Ukrainian satellite communications network. The satellite was launched on 1 October 2026 aboard a SpaceX rocket during the Transporter-18 mission and has begun planned technical tests under Ukrainian control.

Pagrindiniai faktai

  • OBRIA NANO was launched on 1 October 2026.
  • The launch took place aboard a SpaceX rocket during the commercial Transporter-18 mission.
  • HIMERA and GomSpace are developing the future Ukrainian satellite communications network.
  • The satellite is fully controlled by a Ukrainian operator.
  • Technical tests and system calibration are proceeding according to schedule.
  • The next project stage is to localize satellite and ground terminal production in Ukraine.
  • The planned network is intended to cover all of Ukraine and complement European satellite networks.

Kodėl tai svarbu

OBRIA NANO is the first test element of a planned independent Ukrainian satellite communications network. Its technical results will help determine the parameters and design of a fully operational system. The initiative aims to diversify Ukraine's communications channels, reduce reliance on foreign providers and infrastructure, and strengthen strategic security, particularly during wartime. The planned localization of satellite and ground terminal production would also develop Ukraine's own technological capabilities.

Kas nutiko

Ukrainian company HIMERA and Danish company GomSpace launched OBRIA NANO into Earth orbit on 1 October 2026 aboard a SpaceX rocket during the commercial Transporter-18 mission. The satellite is the first test element of the planned OBRIA communications network and is fully controlled by a Ukrainian operator. It has begun planned technical testing and system calibration, with the results expected to inform the design of a full operating satellite communications system. The next stage of the initiative is to localize the production of satellites and ground communication terminals in Ukraine.

Kaip apie tai rašo Ukrainos šaltiniai

Ukrainian coverage presents OBRIA NANO as a step toward a sovereign Ukrainian communications network and localized production. The project is associated with strategic security, reduced dependence on foreign suppliers and infrastructure, and eventual nationwide connectivity. The satellite is also framed as serving Ukraine's security needs and providing a domestic complement to European satellite networks.

Kontekstas

The OBRIA initiative is being developed by Ukrainian company HIMERA and Danish company GomSpace. In addition, Ukraine's Ministry of Defence, Finnish company ICEYE and Nokia signed a memorandum expressing their intention to create a separate satellite communications system. The long-term OBRIA network is intended to provide communication coverage across Ukraine and complement the capabilities of European satellite networks.
